After stir, BJP MLA booked in Meerut lawyer suicide case

After dozens of lawyers found out about the suicide, they held a sit-in in front of the Ganganagar police station and blocked the Meerut-Pauri motorway for more than an hour on Saturday evening.

The MLA called the claim false, claiming the case was politically motivated.

Having dozens of Meerut lawyers put police action in one Suicide of her 50-year-old colleague, BJP MLA from Hastinapur Dinesh Khatik and 14 others were posted on Saturday night pending suicide charges.

A mahapanchayat was called by locals and Omkar Tomar’s family to do him justice. He was found hanging in his home in Meerut on Saturday and in a three-page suicide note accusing Khatik of forcing him to take the extreme. The MLA called the claim false, claiming the case was politically motivated.

After dozens of lawyers found out about the suicide, they held a sit-in in front of the Ganganagar police station and blocked the Meerut-Pauri motorway for more than an hour on Saturday evening. They had requested that Khatik and others be booked on the case.

In a police complaint, Omkar’s son Luv alleged that his in-laws filed a lawsuit against him at the Khatauli Police Station a few months ago under the Dowry Prohibition Act. Khatik and others pressured Omkar to pay Rs 14 lakh to Luv’s in-laws to settle the dowry case, the complaint said.

“We registered an FIR based on a complaint in which his (Omkar’s) son (Luv) made serious suicide charges against nearly 15 people (including the BJP legislature). Khatik has claimed that he was only trying to mediate between the two groups. We still have no evidence that the legislature created any mental pressure or forced the lawyer to give money for mediation, ”said Meerut SSP Ajay Sahni.

Luv, Omkar’s older son, said the villagers would hold a mahapanchyat in a day or two “to do justice to my father.”

Meanwhile, lawyers on Sunday threatened to escalate the protest if the MLA and others were not arrested. “The police are trying every trick to withdraw the MLA’s name from the FIR, but we will force them to take action,” said Mahaveer Tyagi, president of the Meerut Bar Association.

Khatik said: “The case against me is politically motivated and unfounded because opposition leaders are trying to denigrate the image of the BJP and our CM.”
