Horward Varney, Neil Aggett’s family attorney, has denied claims made by a former security officer Eddie Chauke that he never saw the anti-apartheid activist attacked or tortured.
Chauke had been stationed at what was then John Vorster Square Police Station in Johannesburg while Aggett was incarcerated.
He testifies during the investigation into Aggett’s death, which is carried out virtually.
Aggett, a union organizer, was found hanged in his cell on February 5, 1982.
During the cross-examination, Varney cited a statement from Aggett saying that Chauke was present when he was tortured and assaulted by another security officer, James van Schalkwyk.
“Then Dr. Aggett said that this rascal was going to attack me, he slapped me across my face with his open hand and I fell with my back against the table. I never saw an attack while I was there. “
