Washington, November 13th (IANS): Attorneys for Lisa Montgomery, the only female death row in the U.S., have requested a delay in her execution after testing positive for the novel coronavirus, according to court documents.
The two lawyers said they could not file Montgomery’s pardon before Sunday’s deadline. The Xinhua news agency quoted the documents of a lawsuit filed in the US District Court in Washington on Thursday.
They also asked for their execution to be delayed for December 8th.
However, the Justice Department has rejected his application for an extension based on the Covid-19 diagnosis.
Montgomery was the first woman to be executed by the federal government since 1953.
She was convicted in 2007 of strangling a pregnant woman before cutting out and abducting her unborn baby.
The lawyers said she had mental health problems when she committed the crime and should not face the death penalty.
