AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW / WAGT) – Augusta District Attorney Jared Williams announced he would hold a press conference Monday to respond to Governor Kemp’s signing of Senate Law 9. The law separates Columbia County from the Augusta Judicial Circuit effective July 1.
It will be the first time the prosecutor has spoken about the split since it was incorporated into law on Thursday.
Since it was signed, the bill has raised questions about how cases will be handled as Columbia County develops its new circuit and whether the move will force even more delay for cases already lagged behind by the pandemic. A statement from the DA office said Williams plans to address “the breakdown of the circuit and its impact on prosecutors.”
The change was a hotly debated issue, and proponents of the measure said it was time for Columbia County to go into business for themselves. Opponents say they want to keep more than 150 traditions.
The press conference will take place on Monday morning at 10 a.m. It’s not open to the public, but News 12 will be there bringing you the latest information.
Governor Kemp will elect the new Columbia County District Attorney.
