Black & Powerful: Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul

CHICAGO (WLS) – “Black & Powerful” is a long-form streaming series created by ABC 7 Chicago where we sit down with executives from government, entertainment, education, the arts and more to inspire people from all walks of life to achieve their goals.

The fourth episode features ABC 7 Eyewitness News anchor / reporter Karen Jordan and Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul.

In a one-on-one interview, Raoul talked about his upbringing in Chicago, his professional journey, and how his father played an influential role in his work ethic.

“My father has undoubtedly put me in hard work, never quitting, and taking the political positions I held as a state senator that I now occupy in the work we do in the Illinois Attorney General,” said Raoul.

Raoul faced incredible challenges that helped the state navigate COVID-19 as he battled it himself. He fell ill in the summer of 2020 at the height of social unrest over the police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.

“It was an interesting time getting quarantined and spending a lot of time thinking,” said Raoul.

Part of his reflective time has been rephrasing the narrative about what it means to be referred to as an “angry black man”. He posted a letter to his office, which, according to Raoul, was an important moment.

“There’s a lot to be angry with,” said Raoul. “But how I manage it and how I use the energy from it is the most important thing. Not just being angry and not being hit as a result of anger, but turning that into a purpose and acting,” said Raoul said.

Kwame Raoul is one of seven black attorneys general in the United States. He explained the importance of his role in working as a nation to tackle racial inequality, social justice and police reform.

“To the extent that there is collective work among attorneys-general, a significant African American presence in the room makes a difference,” Raoul said.

Raoul said he has taken the position of attorney general in Illinois to influence change and that he is grateful to serve the people of Illinois.
