We discussed the overt bias that the media has shown over the past four years. It is not clear whether we can regain the ground lost for journalism, as even journalism professors call for the rejection of objectivity in favor of the legal profession. This included protecting Joe Biden from challenging questions during the last election. This includes the news drop on coverage of the Hunter Biden scandal, the subject of my column in the Hill today. CNN’s April Ryan embodies this trend. Despite widespread criticism of the media for burying the Hunter Biden story (and now it does so with the Swalwell scandal), Ryan has attacked confidential sources responsible for a recording of Joe Biden being released , and embarrassing comments made about the “discharge the police” movement. Ryan wants to know who is responsible for the embarrassing comments being made public despite their earlier enthusiastic discussion of such leaks against President Donald Trump.
President-elect Biden fought against the Defund the Police movement at a meeting with civil rights leaders this week and said, “So they beat us all over the country and said we were talking about defunding the police. Were not. ”The recording was obtained from The Intercept.
What I found most notable was that Biden said that he would not share his plans to reform the police force until after the Georgia runoff to avoid any voter backlash. While NBC rewrote the quote as a Biden warning that “we are going too far” with critical runoff elections to the Senate in Georgia on January 5, it was more direct and worrying.
Biden said, “Just think of yourself and give me advice on whether we should do this before January 5th, because that’s how they beat us all over the country and said we were talking about defusing the police. “
That’s exactly what Biden did when packing the Supreme Court. He expressly refused to tell voters whether he would support such a plan as it could cost him votes. The crucial question in the runoff election in Georgia is whether once the Democrats have control of the Senate they would push ahead with what are considered radical proposals, including major police reforms. Biden’s answer is again not to tell voters what they have planned.
As I mentioned yesterday, I am not sure when it became acceptable for politicians to specifically refuse to express their intentions and guidelines until they are elected. Biden has said twice now that he doesn’t want voters to know if it might cost votes.
There are a number of questions raised by Biden’s remarks, but Ryan was annoyed at the use of such tapes, which are standard in journalism.
“I asked an incoming White House source if the meeting with the civil rights leader and @JoeBiden was controversial and the answer was ‘no’. A rights leader at the meeting said @JoeBiden is passionate, ”Ryan tweeted. “The question is who recorded this meeting and why? What’s the agenda? “
Ryan then delved deeper into responding to a sarcastic response from Vice Journalist Edward Ongweso Jr. Orgweso noticed this
“It is irresponsible and sets a dangerous precedent for journalists reporting on in-depth administration to be able to use secretly recorded conversations in their stories. To analyze Biden’s thoughts and anticipate his political commitments, you need to be through the right channels.
The White House Press Secretary, President and Vice President Spokespersons, senior officials (non-attributionary), and the President’s public statements are designated and responsible sources of information about the President’s thoughts and intentions. “
It is dangerous to expose a contradiction between Biden’s private thoughts and public statements as it undermines public confidence in the President, the Office and the media themselves.
He tried to explain why Ryan’s view of journalism was absurd, but at one enlightening moment Ryan agreed to this interpretation of journalism that would make a Stalinist propagandist blush. She replied, “You hit the nail in the head! That’s not good at all. “
Ongweso Jr. simply replied, “Guys … I can’t.”
The fact is, Ryan was only explaining what has become the approach of many in the media. As we discussed recently, in collaboration with big tech companies, we are dangerously approaching de facto state media. Ryan finds it outrageous to rely on unauthorized material when critical of Joe Biden (despite using that material against Trump for the past four years).
This week, CNN presenter Kate Bolduan was criticized for wearing a “Facts First” sweater as CNN was criticized for suppressing the Hunter Biden story and lack of coverage of the Swalwell scandal. Now one of CNN’s most famous analysts is declaring that journalists should not rely on unauthorized material about Biden and that the confidential source should be exposed for another media organization. CNN has not expressed any disagreement with Ryan’s view of the new journalism.
It is precisely the realization of the call to journalists to forego objectivity in favor of open lobbying. It is clear that reporters like Ryan, as soon as they forego objectivity, also replace it with open hypocrisy.
