The Supreme Court announced on Monday that Rebecca Anne Womeldorf was appointed as the new rapporteur. She succeeds Christine Luchok Fallon, who retired in September. Womeldorf will start her new position on January 13, 2021.

The rapporteur plays an important behind-the-scenes role in publishing Supreme Court opinions. It creates a summary of each opinion known as a curriculum. It also edits opinions and oversees the process of their publication in the United States Reports.

Womeldorf, the second woman to serve as the ruling rapporteur, comes from the US Courts Administration Office to the Supreme Court, where she served (among other things) as chief attorney for the regular committee staff. Womeldorf is not entirely new to the Supreme Court, however: from 1992 to 1993, she was a clerk for the then retired Judge Lewis Powell and Judge Anthony Kennedy.
