Los Angeles County’s District Attorney is warning local residents, including those in Santa Clarita, of scammers offering fraudulent early COVID-19 stimulus checks.

In a post released by the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office on Dec. 30, community members are cautioned to avoid text messages or emails offering to send federal incentive money early by check or direct deposit.

In a previous statement regarding COVID-19 economic impact payments, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) said:

Scammers can try to get you to sign your check with them or trick you into “verifying” your credentials in order to steal your money. Your personal information could then be used to file false tax returns in an identity theft system. Because of this, anyone who receives a COVID-19 payment for economic impact is at risk. “

In the Stimulus Check Scam, scammers target their victims with the promise to send a quick Stimulus Check payout by posing as different roles like popular retailers.

These crooks then request prepayment so you can get help or try to steal more personal information by pretending to ask for your social security number, bank account, or credit card details in order to receive payment, according to LADA officials.

The prosecution reminds every Los Angeles County citizen, including those of Santa Clarita, not to pay any state aid fees and to reveal your Social Security number, credit card, or bank account information.

If you suspect fraudulent activity, the prosecutor will ask you to contact the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov/complaint.
