ERIE COUNTY, NY (WIVB) – Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard is warning residents of a new bail fraud that has been reported multiple times in his office.
We learned that the program is a scam who identifies himself as a lawyer and contacts people who ask for cash in exchange for a family member. A request is made to withdraw a large amount of dollars and in return the impostor posing as an “attorney” will make arrangements to get the money out of a family member’s home.
The sheriff’s office says you can better protect yourself from this scam by checking the family member’s status directly, asking the so-called attorney which law enforcement agency arrested the family member, and then contacting the agency directly for more information receive. And always hang up.
Officials say a red flag is when the scammers tell you that a rideshare / transport company is taking the money or the person at the residence. The sheriff also says never to give money to an unknown person and never to get into an unknown vehicle.
