Fed Up Residents, Businesses Sue Oregon Governor Kate Brown Over New COVID Restrictions

Kate Brown, the governor of Oregon, was recently brought with a lawsuit over her latest round of COVID-19 restrictions.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a roller coaster ride full of emotion for many across the country. From business closings to wearing masks to distance learning and much more, people from California to New York have turned their lives upside down. Fortunately, we see the light at the end of the tunnel. We have a handful of effective vaccines and therapies, and many states, cities, and towns have started lifting restrictions that have been in place for over a year. Oregon Governor Kate Brown recently placed extreme risk restrictions in dozen of Oregon counties, and now those restrictions are facing litigation.

Earlier this month, a coalition of business owners and the Oregon Moms Union filed a lawsuit against Governor Kate Brown. The suit seeks an injunction. When announcing the suit, Sandy Mayor Stan Pulliam said:

“There is no scientific evidence yet as to why we are still under such an emergency order, and it must come to an end … We are filing an order in federal court to restrict Governor Brown’s emergency order.”

There are four plaintiffs in the lawsuit including The Heart of Main Street, the Oregon Moms Union, Melissa Adams, the owner of Spud Monkey’s and her business. Adams said:

“I can’t pay my rent. I’ve been coming here seven days a week for the past 14 months trying to do this job. I’ve done everything Kate Brown asked me to do. I can not do this anymore. “

Commenting on the criticism she received for trying to keep her business open, Adams said:

“In the past 14 months I lost a bar during COVID. I lost a bar because of COVID. I lost a marriage. I lost a business partner. And unfortunately I lost my son to suicide on July 9th during COVID. Suicide is huge. It’s stronger now than ever … So don’t tell me I didn’t lose a life to COVID because I lost a large part of my life during COVID. “

In addition to this latest lawsuit, the Oregon Moms Union is demanding that students be allowed to attend school in person five days a week. Previously this has not been allowed and many students are still working on a hybrid learning model or engaging in distance learning full time. MacKensey Pulliam, co-founder of the Oregon Moms Union, said, “Kate Brown has made it clear that she will not put our children first.”
