HATHRAS: AP Singh, the attorney who fought in 2012 in defense of the Nirbhaya rapists and announced that he would defend the four men charged in raping Hathras, arrived here on Saturday October 10th.
Singh, along with members of Akhil Bharatiya Kshatriya Mahasabha and former union minister Manvendra Singh, reportedly met the family members of the four accused in the Hathras rape and murder case.
Akhil Bharatiya Kshatriya Mahasabha, an upper caste body, had previously approached AP Singh to defend the four accused in the alleged rape of Hathras. The decision was made by Raja Manvendra Singh, National President of Akhil Bharatiya Kshatriya Mahasabha.
Uttar Pradesh Prime Minister Yogi Adityanath had said that a conspiracy was hatched in the state by politicizing the incident in order to organize an ethnic uprising. The UP police had also filed a lawsuit under IPC sections in Lucknow.
Amid nationwide outrage over the growing number of caste-led rape cases, the Hathras case has begun to gain support from upper caste groups demanding an "unbiased" investigation.
Meanwhile, security in front of the Hathras rape victim's home was increased to ensure the safety of her family members on Friday, October 9th. At least 60 security guards were deployed and eight surveillance cameras were installed in the home of the 19-year-old girl who was allegedly raped by four people in her village in the Bulgarhi area of Hathras.
DIG Shalabh Mathur, who was sent from Lucknow to Hathras as a node officer, informed PTI that a control room would also be set up there if necessary.
Two security guards were assigned to each family member and witness to ensure their personal safety. A team from the fire department and two employees from the local secret services are also stationed there.
The 19-year-old Schedule Caste girl was allegedly raped on September 14th, after which she was admitted to JN Medical College Hospital in Aligarh with serious injuries. She was transferred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi on September 28th after her condition showed no sign of improvement.
She died the next day while receiving treatment at the Delhi hospital. The victim was cremated near her home in the middle of the night on September 30.
Her family claimed that the local police forced them to rush to perform their final rites. On the other hand, local police said the cremation was carried out according to the family's wishes.
