LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – The I-Team spoke to one of Nevada’s most famous criminal lawyers about Derek Chauvin’s verdict and indictment. It is noteworthy that a jury in America rarely convicts a police officer.
Criminal defense attorney David Chesnoff points out a strategy the prosecution is using to tell the jury that this is not a prosecution against the police. It was a prosecution against a man who happened to be a police officer.
Again, the jury usually agrees with law enforcement, but that jury came back with a guilty verdict on all three counts.
Chesnoff believes both the prosecution and defense did a good job on this case. He tells the I-Team that he believes Chauvin’s defense attorney can’t do much, especially because of the video of Chauvin kneeling on George Floyd’s neck.
“I mean, I was thinking of different defense mechanisms, maybe some kind of defense against mental illness, because someone is standing there telling people that the person is dying and doing nothing, it’s just that there was something either very sadistic about this guy, ”said Chesnoff. “I mean, it was like a lynching.”
The jury deliberated for about 10 hours before delivering the verdict.
