Indian-American Democrat and attorney Aftab Pureval has announced his candidacy for mayor of Cincinnati, promising to improve the lives of people in the major U.S. city amid the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

Hamilton County’s court clerk, Mr Pureval, confirmed his candidacy in a tweet on Jan. 14.

“Our country is at a critical moment, and so is our city. And so I am delighted to announce my candidacy as the next mayor of Cincinnati,” tweeted the 38-year-old Democractic Party politician.

“I’m running for mayor to bring leadership experience and a record of improving government services to the table – starting with an economic COVID recovery that will benefit every neighborhood in our city and a plan to restore confidence in City Hall “he said in another tweet.


Aftab Pureval’s parents immigrated to Xenia, Ohio from India in 1980, according to a local newspaper, The Enquirer. He lost the race for Congress in 2018.

“The truth is, families really have problems. Our city is at a critical moment and the progress of the last decade is at stake. We have to swing out of the gate after COVID-19 to get our economy going again “He was quoted by the newspaper. The candidates in the fight for the office of mayor include four city council members and a senator.
