Karnataka lawyer hacked to death in broad daylight at Hospet court

The defendant stormed into the courthouse on a motorcycle and attacked Venkatesh in the head and neck with a sharp weapon, killing him instantly.

A lawyer from Hospet, newly formed Vijayanagara district, was hacked to death on Saturday in broad daylight on the civil court premises, according to a Times Of India report. The attorney, 48-year-old Tarihalli Venkatesh, was attacked in the courthouse by Tarahalli Manoj, 22, who was identified by police as a relative of the attorney.

Venkatesh was sitting in the courthouse with his colleagues at around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday when the killer stormed into the courthouse on his bike. While the audience watched in horror, Manoj chopped Venkatesh in the head and neck with a sharp weapon and immediately knocked him over.

Srinivas Meti from the Hospet Police Station told TOI that the police could reach the defendant while he was trying to run away.

Police also said preliminary investigations revealed that Manoj is a relative of the victim Venkatesh and it is believed that the main reason for the murder was a property dispute. He also told TOI that other angles are also being investigated to determine the exact reason. Police also said that both the killer and the victim lived in the same neighborhood. The case was registered at the Hospet Police Station.

The Deccan Herald identified Venkatesh as a member of Congress. He is survived by his wife and four children.

The incident occurred after a couple of lawyers were hacked to death while returning from work in Telangana on February 17th. Lawyers Gattu Vaman Rao and his wife Nagamani, who were riding a four-wheeler, were ambushed and killed on the street by unknown assailants in the Peddapalli district of Telangana.

The couple recently petitioned the High Court over the alleged death of Seelam Rangaiah, a Dalit man arrested on charges of poaching wild animals.
