In our My Monday Morning series, self-motivated people talk about WSJ. how they start the week.
The divorce looks different during the pandemic. A memorable image of this period is the screenshot of Mary-Kate Olsen and Olivier Sarkozy’s Zoom divorce negotiation, which went viral last month. It was a novelty for many to see such high profile operations play out using the same video calling software used for meetings and conference calls in the office. But prominent divorce attorney Laura Wasser from Wasser, Cooperman & Mandles enjoys the efficiency. “The nature of family law has always been a lot of face-to-face, face-to-face and face-to-face meetings,” she says. “I can [have] five or six meetings a day at Zoom, which I never could have done [before]. ”
Wasser, 52, is not representing Olsen or Sarkozy, but on Friday she filed divorce papers for Kim Kardashian West when she was long divorced from Kanye West. It’s her second time representing Kardashian West. The first was the social media star and entrepreneur’s second divorce from Kris Humphries in 2013. Another of Wasser’s clients included Britney Spears when she divorced Kevin Federline in 2007; Angelina Jolie, when the actor filed for divorce from Brad Pitt in 2016 (the process is ongoing); and in 2018, both Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck hired Wasser to mediate their divorce rather than opting for separate lawyers. She is currently also representing Armie Hammer, whose wife Elizabeth Chambers filed for divorce last year.
The work of the well-known lawyer has earned the tabloid nickname “Disso Queen” (short for dissolution of marriage). Wasser was married once for a year in 1993; She has two sons, a 15 year old and an 11 year old. In Noah Baumbach’s divorce film Marriage Story from 2019, the family law attorney played by Laura Dern is said to be based on water, who represented Baumbach’s ex-wife Jennifer Jason Leigh in her divorce. Wasser also operates It’s Over Easy online divorce platform, which enables couples with undisputed divorces to file online. She calls the website a passion project and says she doesn’t make any money from it. Here she is speaking to WSJ. about the strangest thing she ever arranged and why she could never meditate.
