Lacey, Gascon square off in L.A. County district attorney race

The Los Angeles District Attorney’s battle is one of the most closely watched local races in the country, viewed by many as a referendum on criminal justice reform after a summer of protests against police brutality.

Former San Francisco Dist. Atty. George Gascón set a well-funded challenge to veteran LA County Dist. Atty. Jackie Lacey, from left, claims she failed to hold police accountable and oversee a regressive bureau that is only focused on punishing crimes rather than reducing them.

Lacey countered that during her eight-year tenure, she weighed the need for forbearance and pre-trial distraction against public safety. She claims Gascón’s lack of experience as a prosecutor prevents him from getting his way.
