Lawsuit: Nevada Mom Says Charter School Forced Her Biracial Son to Claim

The lawsuit suggests that William Clark – who is biracial – was selected for privilege tests because of his white appearance.

A Nevada mother has filed a lawsuit against her son’s charter school, claiming the teachers would not allow him to drop a class that encourages white hostility.

According to The College Fix’s coverage of the case, the Democracy Preparatory Academy on the Agassi Campus prompted William Clark to take a course called The Sociology of Change. The class was listed as one of Clark’s last remaining graduation requirements.

As part of the sociology curriculum, students examined and discussed the real impact of prejudice, as well as academic concepts such as white privilege and patriarchy. Students were told that if they refuse to identify and recognize their membership in certain “privileged” groups, they contribute to the oppression of other people.

In a classroom presentation, students were shown slides listing the “dominant” social groups in the United States: “white”, “male”, “middle / upper class”, “heterosexual” and “Christian”.

“Everyone else” was classified as “submissive”.

Clark, notes Fox News, is biracial – his mother is Black while his late father was White. In court records, Clark recalls how he felt discriminated against and harassed by various elements of the sociology program.

Clark was allegedly forced, among other things, “in verbal class exercises and in graded, written homework to do professions about his racial, sexual, gender and religious identity.”

The teacher – a self-identified “white Irish American citizen with privileges” – said or otherwise suggested that Clark was sabotaging other groups’ chances of success by not reflecting on his privilege as a partially white man.

Clark, along with some of his classmates, verbally rejected certain aspects of the curriculum.

“For this protected speech and others who like it, Defendant Kathryn Bass [the teacher] ended the class discussion immediately with the intent to cool and discourage future objections to the defendants’ sponsored politicized ideology, ”the lawsuit reads.

The lawsuit, according to Fox News, took further account of the irony inherent in Clark’s case. While Democracy Prep encourages students to engage in social and political disagreements such as “occupying” a cafeteria, Clark’s opposition to Bass’ teaching strategy would not tolerate this.

Clark’s lawyers said the boy was signaled because – and despite his biracial heritage – he was fair complexed with fair hair and green eyes.

“Defendants, who include a government-funded and sponsored charter school, teachers and senior administrators, have deliberately created a hostile educational environment for Plaintiff William Clark, who unlike his classmates is and is viewed as white by his peers,” the lawsuit said States. “The defendants have been discriminated in this way on the basis of race and color, as well as sex, gender and religion, in violation of Title VI and Title IX of the 1972 Educational Changes.”

Clark and his mother, Gabrielle, are seeking an emergency order that will give William his degree and give him “an alternative, non-discriminatory, non-denominational class that will restore him to good academic status when applying for college.”
