Lawyer Levent Pişkin, who was arrested in 2016 for meeting the arrested former co-chair of the People’s Democratic Party (HDP) Selahattin Demirtaş, had his last heating today (November 18).

The 8th Bursa Serious Criminal Court ruled that eleven defendants, including lawyers Levent Pişkin, Cahit Kırkazak and Ayşe Batumlu, will be acquitted of all charges.

On trial as part of the same file, a defendant was sentenced to 5 years in prison for “possession of unregistered firearms”.

What happened?

Levent Pişkin, an attorney for the arrested former HDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş, was taken into custody on November 14, 2016 at around 5 a.m. during a police raid on his home in Istanbul.

Prior to his imprisonment, some news platforms such as the pro-government Takvim, Sabah and Ulusal Kanal reported that Pişkin Demirta’s news would be relayed to a magazine in Germany so that it could be used for propaganda purposes.

When the investigation into Pişkin began in Bursa Province, he was brought to Bursa on November 15, 2016. Levent Pişkin was released after making a statement to the local prosecutor’s office.

The prosecutor of Bursa, Gökhan Şen, indicted Levent Pişkin in April 2017, accusing lawyer Pişkin of visiting his client Selahattin Demirtaş in prison with his lawyer card. WhatsApp messages from the lawyer were also cited as criminal evidence.

The 33-page indictment sent to the 8th Serious Criminal Court in Bursa charged 12 people, including Batumlu, Kırkazak and Pişkin, with “membership in the organization” and “propaganda for the organization”.

Opinion on the allegations

In his opinion on the allegations, Prosecutor Baysal alleged that 12 people, including Pişkin, Kırkazak and Batumlu, “had ties to the organization, were part of the organization’s hierarchy, and left their will to the top execution and the leader of the organization’s members of the armed terrorist organization, and has also committed the crime of promoting a terrorist organization. “

Accordingly, the public prosecutor’s office demanded that the accused be punished separately in accordance with Article 314/2 of the Turkish Criminal Code (TCK), Article 5/1 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (TMK); Article 7 / 2-2 of TMK no. 3713 and Articles 53, 54, 58 and 63 of the TCK.
