Patel replaces former acting attorney David DeVillers, who resigned after the Justice Department announced it would ask US attorneys appointed by former President Donald Trump to resign. Patel was not appointed by President Biden and a permanent replacement is usually announced within six months, according to prosecutors.
“These are giant shoes that need filling and I am humble and honored to fill them,” Patel said in a statement. “The important work of the officials in this office – and their commitment to justice – continues. Our casework will continue uninterrupted. “
