Mayor Eric Garcetti switches endorsement in L.A. District Attorney race | News Briefs

Short messages City Hall

LA Mayor Eric Garcetti switched his approval of the Los Angeles District Attorney's race from incumbent Jackie Lacey to challenger George Gascon today.

The mayor tweeted, "I'm proud to be supporting @GeorgeGascon for the LA District Attorney."

Following national protests calling for criminal justice reforms following the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, many officials have withdrawn their support for Lacey, who is seeking a third term.

Gascon served as the D.A. for San Francisco for eight years and has worked in the Los Angeles Police Department. He has recommendations from national leaders such as US Sens. Bernie Sanders from Vermont and Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts.

Lacey declined Garcetti's endorsement "as an attempt by Gascon to distract from his performance in a Saturday night debate that she described as a" disaster "according to the Los Angeles Times."
