North Carolina Attorney General Election 2020: What To Know

What you need to know about reigning Josh Stein (D) and challenger Jim O’Neill (R).

RALEIGH, NC – North Carolina’s Attorney General consists of incumbent Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein and Republican challenger Jim O’Neill.

The attorney general is North Carolina’s attorney for the state and represents all government agencies and commissions. The General Assembly, the Governor, or any other official may obtain legal advice from the Attorney General upon request.

The attorney general may take legal action or intervene on behalf of the North Carolina government or any other state or federal court, regulator, or agency.

The Attorney General also handles all criminal complaints from state courts.

Stein has served as the North Carolina Attorney General since 2017.

About Josh Stein (D)

Prior to his election as attorney general, Stein was a Senator in North Carolina between 2009 and 2016. Between 2001 and 2008, Stein served as the Assistant Attorney General for Consumer Protection in North Carolina. After college, he taught English and economics in Zimbabwe before working as a lawyer. Stein graduated from Dartmouth College in 1988. He also holds degrees from Harvard Law School and Harvard Kennedy School with a major in politics.

Stein’s Topics To Prioritize In His Choice According To His Campaign Website:

Fix the state’s backlog on rape kits and related issues

· Promote public safety

· Protect seniors and consumers

· Keep clean air and clean water

· Promotion of public health

In the run-up to Tuesday’s elections, both Democratic and Republican attorneys went to court over issues with mail-in and postal voting issues. Signature matches, late postal votes, drop boxes, and non-disclosure envelopes all had problems during an election season when mail-in votes are likely to be heavily dependent on how COVID-19 has reshaped the logistics for voting.

Stein filed a lawsuit against the United States Postmaster General in August prior to the 2020 election. At the time, Stein opposed the changes to the USPS, which resulted in slower delivery times, which created early voting issues in North Carolina.

“It’s a lifeline for rural North Carolina. It’s important for small businesses. This is how veterans get their medicine. In a pandemic, our voice can be heard through its vote in our democracy, ”Stein said.

About Jim O’Neill (R)

Republican challenger Jim O’Neill has served as the Forsyth County’s district attorney for the past decade, serving three terms since 2009. Before he took up the DA position, he worked as a prosecutor for 13 years. He is also Vice President of the North Carolina Conference of District Attorneys. O’Neill graduated from Duke University in 1988. Upon graduation, he earned a law degree from New York University Law School.

O’Neill’s topics, according to his campaign website, should be prioritized if chosen:

· Commitment to the prosecution of domestic violence

· Prosecuting sex offenders

· Prosecuting violent criminals and those who abuse and take advantage of the elderly

· The North Carolina opioid crisis

Jim O’Neill ran in the attorney general’s race back in 2016 but lost.

During his campaign, he spoke on issues that intersect with immigration and local law enforcement.

“I work with our ICE agents every day. Our work with ICE and local law enforcement is one of the reasons Winston-Salem was recently named the Safest City in NC. As an AG, I would make sure North Carolina is not a place.” , on which sanctuary cities are allowed to grow, “he wrote on Twitter.
