CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The video above shows members of the Nueces District Attorney’s Criminal Interdiction Unit searching for hidden cash for drug cartels in this vehicle. It was recently stopped along Highway 77.
The unit’s overseer, Mike Tamez, believes he and his colleagues can only find up to 5% of the illegal contraband moving up and down the freeway.
“The intelligence services suggest that the cartels are taking advantage of the port of entry and the immigration problem of the immigration crisis,” said Tamez.
Tamez says his unit didn’t have five large busts along Highway 77 until March.
“Five cases in March related to cartel, five and that’s unusual in that area to get five,” Tamez said.
There are now 12 members of that ban squad, and Tamez says the cartels will flood Highway 77 with drug smugglers this holiday weekend, and there is little he and his unit can do about it, even with nine times as many agents.
