JOHANNESBURG – The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) said Friday it was a shame that South African Airways (SAA) workers continue to bear the brunt of the national airline’s mismanagement despite a corporate bailout plan.

The union said its members at SAA Technical had not yet received their salaries.

The workers were due to receive their salaries on March 27th, and management of the embattled state airline then promised to make the payment by April 1st.

That deadline has come and gone without any knowledge of when the workers will be paid.

SAA was placed under a business rescue for mismanagement about two years ago, leaving it in dire straits.

Numsa has since directed its attorneys to take the necessary action.

The spokesman Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said: “The Ministry of Public Enterprises has no plans this time to try to cushion the workers and solve these problems in such a way that there are no salary breaks during the rescue process.”
