Stephen R. Kaufman, First Assistant to Former US Attorney Scott W. Brady, has been named Acting US Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania, effective Monday.

In this role, Kaufman will lead nearly 130 people who represent the United States in courts in the 25 western counties of Pennsylvania, including offices in Pittsburgh, Erie and Johnstown. Lawrence County falls in the western district.

Brady resigned from his position on Friday, following orders from the Biden administration that most U.S. attorneys should resign.

Kaufman’s career in the Justice Department spanned four decades. More recently, he was named the first U.S. assistant attorney in April 2018. Prior to that, he held a number of senior positions in the US attorney’s office, including head of the criminal justice department from 2010 to 2018.

Kaufman joined the US law firm in 1988 after graduating from Allegheny College in 1981. He worked as a lawyer in Pittsburgh and taught courses at the University of Pittsburgh Law School.
