Probate and Conservatorship Attorney Lisa MacCarley to

LOS ANGELES, May 10, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Probate and Conservatory Attorney Lisa MacCarley, a passionate supporter of the #FreeBritney movement, announced that she would be featured in the upcoming BBC Select documentary, “The Battle for Britney: Fans, Cash and a Conservatorship, ”which will air Tuesday, May 11, 2021. In BAFTA-winning journalist Mobeen Azhar’s 60-minute documentary, Ms. MacCarley answers questions about the disturbing way in which the Conservatory was founded by Ms. Spears.

Lisa MacCarley has been an active advocate of conservatory and guardianship reform. At the beginning of 2020 she founded the non-profit “Bettys’ Hope” to draw attention to deficiencies in the conservatory and guardianship courts in our country. When Bettys’ Hope is fully implemented, there will be a system of training and overseeing attorneys who represent those who stand in front of and under supervision, similar to the Public Defender’s Office for Criminal Defendants, but which is manned by attorneys, who have experience in representing adults who are allegedly unable to work.

“The inspiration for Bettys’ Hope came from working with two families, both with loved ones named ‘Betty’,” explains Ms. MacCarley. “Every family has experienced unnecessary trauma, exploitation and abuse because of the current court-appointed legal system. Currently court-appointed attorneys do not receive meaningful training or supervision, and yet local probate courts rely almost entirely on “reports” and recommendations from these attorneys. The system is clearly broken, as evidenced by films like Netflix’s “I Care A Lot” and the terrifying episode of “Dirty Money” starring Guardians, but no one sees the lack of training, supervision and accountability of the “lawyers” “those of the bank employees.” be selected for these important roles. “

In addition to the BBC documentary, Attorney MacCarley was recently interviewed for the Toxic: The Britney Spears Story podcast, which will air this summer on Stitcher, a subsidiary of NPR. On their podcast, Britney’s Gram, journalists Tess Barker and Barbara Gray discuss Britney’s controversial conservatory and uncover disturbing truths about our legal system.

“In the ‘Toxic: The Britney Spears Story“” Says Ms. MacCarley, “I am talking about policies and practices used in the Los Angeles County’s probate courts that are inconsistent with the rule of law as laid down by California lawmakers.” These practices and guidelines, such as having a court-appointed attorney give an opinion on one’s client’s ability to hire an attorney, absolutely lead to injustice.

“As an estate and conservatoire attorney for over 25 years, I have seen injustices resulting from failure to comply with the law. Failure to comply with the law coupled with an astonishing lack of empathy and understanding often leads to financial and psychological damage. I hope to be able to draw attention to the fact that our nation’s preservation and guardianship courts need more rigorous training and supervision. Our elders and others exposed to the Conservatory deserve much better representation than what is currently on offer. “

The Battle for Britney: Fans, Money, and a ConservatoryWill air on May 11, 2021 on BBC Select, accessible on Apple TV or Amazon Prime Video.
