American rapper DMX was hospitalized Saturday night after his illness, said his New York-based attorney Murray Richman.
“He’s had a heart attack. He’s pretty sick,” said Richman.
Richman said he couldn’t confirm reports that DMX, 50, overdosed on drugs and wasn’t sure what caused the heart attack.
“I’m very sad about it, extremely sad. He’s like my son, ”said Richman.
“He’s just a great person, a great entertainer, a great person. And so much to offer, so much to say. Not the ordinary rapper. A person of great depth. “
Previous reports said DMX, 50, was life sustaining, but Richman told Pix11 he later breathed on his own.
A representative for the rapper told TMZ that the rapper “remains in critical condition in intensive care. Earl was a warrior all his life. This situation is another road he must overcome … The Simmons family have appreciated the overwhelming outpouring of love, encouragement, support, and prayers for Earl. “
DMX, whose real name was Earl Simmons, had five US No. 1 albums with hip hop anthems like Party Up (in here), What’s My Name, and X Gon ‘Give It to Ya. His first two albums were released months apart in 1998. Each album went multi-platinum and was hugely popular for adding a Gothic darkness to an increasingly dazzling rap scene. He has released a total of seven albums and received three Grammy nominations.
He began an acting career in the crime drama Belly in 1998 alongside hip-hop stars like Nas and Method Man. He specialized in crime fiction, starring alongside Steven Seagal in Exit Wounds (2000) and another with Jet Li in Cradle 2 the Grave (2003).
Over the years DMX has struggled with substance abuse. The rapper has canceled a number of shows to check into a rehab facility in 2019. In an Instagram post, his team apologized for the canceled shows and thanked his fans for their continued support.
In 2015, he was sentenced to six months in prison for failing to pay alimony. Simmons has 15 children. The youngest, Exodus, was born in 2016.
In 2018 he served a one-year prison sentence for tax evasion.
Last year, DMX competed against Snoop Dogg in a Verzuz fight that drew more than 500,000 viewers.
