BOSTON (WGGB / WSHM) – The U.S. Attorney's Office released an update on gun crimes in Massachusetts.
Officials said at the start of the pandemic violent crime was at a 30-year low, but those numbers have been increasing again in the past six months.
Local, state and federal officials met in Boston Wednesday to discuss ways to reduce gun crime and the state of violent crime in our cities.
"Springfield only had a gun violence murder on Monday. It's quite an upswing. So far this year Springfield has confiscated 135 illegally owned firearms and what surprised us is the strength of the weapons we confiscate." Explained Clapprood.
Clapprood said 38 of these weapons had been confiscated since July 21.
Officials also discussed Project Guardian, an initiative to reduce gun violence and combat repeat offenders.
