Speaking to the IANS news agency about his life in Brazil, Thomas said: “I came to Sao Paulo at the end of 1989 as part of a foreign training program. When I came here, the country was hit by high inflation (more than 5,000 percent per year). Although the country is extraordinarily rich, it also has a high rate of corruption. The right-wing government, which had been in power for many years, favored the rich class. Brazil is three times the size of India and has almost two thirds of the Amazon rainforest. The gap between rich and poor is very evident in Brazil. ” Read also – Hackers threaten to make obscene images of people viral and demand extortion of 10 rupees

“When I came to Brazil, I had a wonderful social experience with the landless / homeless who lived here and saw other social movements here. I also visited Amazon for the first time in 1990 and got the opportunity to live with the traditional tribal people there. The vast Amazon forest and its natural resources have attracted many people from all over the world, ”he added. When asked about his inspiration for environmental protection, Thomas said, “I was born into a farming family who had lots of land and lived in the middle of the village in Ramapuram, Palai, Kottayam District. My uncles lived within great reach and I always went to these areas in my childhood. My father was a local politician and social worker who took a keen interest in environmental protection. He was a great inspiration to me. But when I graduated from Mysore University, I developed a great interest in the Amazon forest and always dreamed of visiting it. “

He added, “As soon as I got to Brazil, I went to Amazon. The first visit to Amazon was very inspiring because I was able to live with tribal and river communities in Amazon. As soon as I finished my studies in Sao Paulo, I chose Amazon. “

“As an environmental and social activist, I have decided to devote my life to the cause of Amazon and its local people, producing knowledge and sharing it. I know I’ll have to face a lot of challenges, but my conviction that we need Amazon is much stronger than any challenge, ”said Thomas.
