TRS leader Putta Madhu accused in lawyer couple murder case, detained

Madhu was reportedly missing since the state government ordered former minister Eatala Rajender to investigate the land trade.

Telangana police on Saturday arrested Peddapalli Zilla Parishad chairman Putta Madhu, whose name played a role in the murder of a couple of lawyers and who was “missing” for almost a week. The leader of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) was picked up by the Ramagundam City Police in Bhimavaram, Andhra Pradesh and taken to Ramagundam.

It was immediately unclear whether he was arrested for interrogation in the murder case or in connection with the investigation into Rajender. Madhu’s name had come up during the investigation into the murder of Gattu Vaman Rao and Nagamani. The Supreme Court couple were brutally hacked to death in broad daylight on February 17 this year. Before Vaman Rao succumbed to his injuries, he had adopted the name Kunta Srinivas, a local TRS leader. Police arrested Sriniva’s and Madhu’s nephews, Bittu Seenu

The deceased couple’s family claimed Madhu was behind the murder as they battled controversial cases, including a disproportionate property case against Madhu. Madhu’s name came up during the investigation after an audio clip came to light in which Srinivas spoke to a person who sounded like a hit man by taking the name Madhu several times. However, the chairman of Zilla Parishad was not arrested. Vaman Rao’s father recently filed a new complaint with the police, seeking an investigation into Madhu’s role in the twin murders.

The development is also gaining momentum as he is believed to be a supporter of Eatala Rajender, who was removed from the state cabinet earlier this week by Prime Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on charges of invading peasant land. When the government ordered an investigation into the land trade of former Minister Madhu, who was reportedly doing business with Rajender, he was missing. There were also reports that he was in Hyderabad trying to meet the chief minister.
