CLEVELAND – The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio raised $ 21.6 million in civil cases and nearly $ 7 million in criminal cases in the past fiscal year ended September 30, 2020.
U.S. attorney Justin Herdman said his office, in collaboration with partner agencies and departments, has also raised $ 11.5 million in forfeiture assets.
Forfeited assets deposited with the Department of Justice’s Forfeiture Fund are used to restore funds to crime victims and for various law enforcement purposes.
“This year, when many of our processes and procedures had to be changed due to the pandemic, the Northern District was nonetheless able to recover significant amounts of money from numerous civil and criminal judgments.” Herdman explained in a press release.
Herdman resigned as a US attorney effective Friday.
Examples include funds that expire in drug trafficking or corruption cases. Cases of asset loss include situations where goods are imported when prohibited.
