Kirpal’s celebrated career and contribution to the country’s civil rights jurisprudence as a learned attorney are enough to warrant a trial as a Supreme Court Justice. It is precisely this background that reflects his legal acumen that resulted in the Delhi Supreme Court unanimously recommending his name for the position of permanent judge.
On March 19, 2021, Kirpal was named a Senior Advocate by the Delhi Supreme Court. It was the unanimous decision of the court, with all 31 judges voting in its favor.
Probably one of Kirpal’s best contributions would be the Navtej Johar case, which led to the decriminalization of homosexuality in India by reading through Section 377 of India’s Criminal Code.
Kirpal continues his pursuit of equality for the LGBTQIA + community and is currently embroiled in litigation pending before the Delhi Supreme Court to seek marriage equality for homosexual couples.
